Have there been any safety studies on patients with stage 3 kidney disease who are taking supplemental DHA/EPA?
There have been some studies indicating that kidney patients who consume more fish as a source of DHA/EPA may be at a somewhat lower risk for serious cardiac events. Intakes of DHA/EPA (sum of 1000 mg/day) as recommended by the American Heart Association for those with coronary heart disease are regularly consumed in Japanese adults. Early studies by Dr. Jim Donadio at the Mayo Clinic reported a slowing of the progression of kidney disease in patients with IgA nephropathy who were given 3000 mg/day of EPA/DHA for at least 2 years. These results have not been consistently confirmed in follow-up studies.
