What is the potential benefit of supplementation with EPA/DHA for people with inflammatory bowel disorders?

A recent all-inclusive review of this topic reported upon isolated but inconsistent reports on the beneficial effects of EPA/DHA supplementation in inflammatory bowel disease. A marginal significant benefit for omega-3 therapy in maintaining remission in patients with Crohns disease was indicated. The overall conclusion from the Cochrane Group as published in 2009 was that omega-3 fatty acids were considered to be generally safe but that the existing data do not support routine maintenance treatment of Crohn’s disease with omega-3 fatty acids.
