Is there any evidence that EPA may be harmful during pregnancy?
There are a number of studies where the consumption of fish (which contain both DHA and EPA with the former being predominant more often) during pregnancy have been correlated with beneficial effects in the infant and child (up to 8 years of age). Supplemental studies containing DHA/EPA (usually with a predominance of the former) have indicated potentially beneficial effects in some trials. Recommended intakes from various sources on the ingestion of omega-3 fatty acids during pregnancy and lactation have focused upon DHA. It is still not clear if DHA with some EPA offers any advantages over DHA alone during pregnancy/ lactation.
