Is there an optimum amount (DHA + EPA) for a healthy person and is there a risk of the body getting used to them such that cessation for a period of time may pose some difficulty?
Dear AS,
As discussed on our website, www.dhaomega3.org, various groups have recommended a daily intake of DHA/EPA (combined) of 500-600mg per day for healthy people. There is no evidence in the medical literature for developing an 'addiction type' affinity for DHA/EPA such that cessation for a period of time may pose difficulties. However, cessation for a period of a few days or more will result in a progressively lower status of DHA/EPA in the circulation and various body tissues with a corresponding decrease in the benefits that they may have been providing.
