Are there plant sources of DHA?
Dear AB,
Naturally-occurring plant food/sources and seed/vegetable oils are totally devoid of DHA regardless of the presences in some of these of omega-3 fatty acid as alpha-linolenic acid (LNA). Thus, the presence of flax seed or flax seed oil (naturally rich in LNA) in a food product would provide varying amounts of LNA but no DHA. Over the past few years, commercial sources of algae have been developed such that the algal oil derived therefrom does contain DHA. Thus, the insertion of the latter algal oils into a food product does provide a source of pre-formed DHA.
